Sharp4Prostate Team return from successful Race Across America · 29/06/10

London, June 25 2010 – Sharp UK managing director, Paul Molyneux, this week returned from successfully completing the 2010 Race Across America as part of the four-man Sharp4Prostate team.

Finishing the 3,000 mile cycle race well inside their target of seven days, the team placed third overall, receiving an award for the best performance by a single club, in recognition of their exceptional efforts.

The team was racing to raise awareness of prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men in the UK, and as the culmination of Sharp4Prostate’s year-long fundraising activities that have so far raised more than £60,000 for The Prostate Cancer Charity.

The four middle-aged club cyclists rode for 24 hours a day, passing through 14 states and climbing for a total of over 100,000ft in pursuit of the challenge. Covering a total of 3,005 miles at an average of 430 miles a day, the race is 30% longer than the Tour De France – in only one stage!

Paul Molyneux was full of praise for the tireless work of the team’s volunteer support crew, and put the success down to meticulous preparation: “We were a totally rookie crew, but this element of innocence was probably to our advantage. We prepared professionally and executed clinically. All the parts of the whole came together and the process delivered us to the finish in even better time and shape than we could possibly have hoped.”

John Neate, Chief Executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity, said:

“The Sharp4Prostate team has shown great determination in their efforts to create a buzz around prostate cancer and vital funds for the Charity. The Race Across America is one of the most grueling endurance events known to man and finishing third is an amazing accomplishment. Paul and the team have put themselves through an extreme challenge and we are very grateful for their support. One man dies of prostate cancer every hour in the UK and so spreading the message about this disease is incredibly important. We are delighted to be working so closely with Sharp Electronics and look forward to hearing all about the team’s adventures on the road.”

The Prostate Cancer Charity is Sharp Electronics UK’s official charity partner, and the company is continuing to push for a total fundraising target of £100,000 by the end of the summer.
