National Criterium Champion, Dean Downing, crashed heavily whilst taking part in the team January training camp.

We asked Deano how he is.

How are you doing with your injuries and are you back on your bike?

Dean: My injuries are not as bad as first thought when we were in Spain, my head injury is healing nicely and I have seen a consultant doctor in Sheffield, Doctor David Potter. He checked out my x-rays and the movement I have in my collarbone, this was six days after the accident. We talked about my planned first race and then he said I would be able to ride on the turbo as soon as possible and didn’t see any complications and I will be back on the road four weeks after the accident.

How did it happen?

Dean: I was chasing back to the guys after getting dropped on the last climb of the day, 10km from the hotel on our six hour ride. I hit a series of pot holes whilst going at about 50kmph, I reckon I was a bit tired and just didn’t see them, my left hand went through the handlebars and I lost control of my bike hitting the deck soon after.

What were your injuries?

Dean: I have 15 stitches in my head and I have a fractured collarbone, right on the edge of the plate that I have from a previous crash three years ago.

Will the crash upset your 2009 plans?

Dean: Not too much I hope, but I have had to cancel my first race of 2009, which was an invite to ride the Singapore Criterium on 22nd February.

I wont be doing as many hours and km’s in the next month but all the hard work on the turbo will hopefully get me fit as I want to be ready at the start of the season.

Dean will spending the upcoming team training camp riding the rollers.
