Lincoln Report · 12/05/09
The Lincoln Grand Prix is one of the UK’s most prestigious one-day races, based on a circuit taking in the centre of Lincoln and the feared cobbled climb of Michaelgate. After numerous attempts at breaks were all caught, a useful group opened a gap after the halfway point. It comprised of several race favourites including last years winner, Russell Downing, with Malcolm Elliott, Ian Wilkinson and Rapha Condor’s Kristian House and Tom Southam in tow. While the break was at full speed and with the bunch chasing hard, Chris Newton and Dean Downing managed to jump across to make it four of our riders in the fifteen man break.
As the race went on, the climb of Michaelgate took its toll with Tom among those losing contact. The damage was being done by Russell Downing’s constant attacks. After various digs by Dean, Kristian, and Chris, and with the break getting smaller in number, three riders, Russell Downing, Ian Wilkinson and our own Chris Newton escaped for the last lap. Chris attempted an attack on the last climb, but his earlier effort getting across to the break took its toll and he came in 3rd behind Russell Downing and Ian Wilkinson. Dean managed to hang on for 4th.
Kristian came in 11th, Dan 12th and Simon 13th.
