FBD Ras, Ireland - Stage 2 Update · 19/05/09

Stage 2 saw Rapha Condor rider Simon Richardson climb up to 2nd on GC after being away in a break for over 150km. The break contained eight riders representing some of the major teams in the race. With strong headwinds and heavy rain they still managed to pull away from the bunch. There were a lot of chasing groups formed and caught. Although none of the groups managed to make contact, one promising group contained Kristian and Chris.

Simon went over the top of the days major climb at the head of the break gaining maximum points in the KoM competition.

By the time the break hit the climb in the closing kilometre there were just two riders left, with Halfords rider, Ian Wilkinson, edging away from Simon for the stage win. Darren Lapthorne came in just over three minutes behind in a small group and has moved up to 5th overall. Chris Newton came in 15th to move up to 15th overall, seven minutes behind and the main bunch now nine minutes in arrears.

As well as being 2nd on GC, Simon is also 2nd in the Mountains and Points competitions, and wears the Points jersey tomorrow with Ian Wilkinson in yellow. The team are now leading the Team Competition.

Tomorrow’s stage is 189km with two Cat. 1 climbs to contend with, one at the midway point and another in the last 20km which could be crucial.
