East Midlands CiCle Classic 2010 report · 26/04/10

Dan Craven put in a display of grit and determination to clinch a well earned 2nd place in the East Midlands CiCle Classic on Sunday, 25th April 2010. After puncturing twice in the last 30km of the race, Dan dug deep and fought to regain the lead group before the finish.

The race started under clouds and drizzle and the early phases around Rutland Water saw repeated attacks and regrouping. It wasn’t until the first climb of Cold Overton Hill that the final group began to form. Initially there was no representation from Rapha Condor Sharp. But by the second climb of Burrough-on-the-Hill, Dan Craven had made it across to the lead group with the Stanley Matthews of pro-cycling, 49 year old Malcom Elliott. Dan looked comfortable in the group until suffering a double puncture during the second passage through the Somerberg farm-track sector. Following a valiant and determined chase across Stygate Lane, Dan made contact with the lead group again before the final reckoning in Melton. Heading into the final 200m Dan was well positioned in the group but finally lost out in the sprint to Michael Berling, last year’s runner up.
