2010 British Road Race Championships · 29/06/10
After the elation of 2009 when Kristian House upset the form book so dramatically, this years race was was dominated by the continental based brits as Team Sky took a clean sweep of the podium.
On a brutal course that saw the riders complete over 4000m of climbing an early breakaway by Jeremy Hunt ultimately defined the race as he was joined by a quartet of riders who included 3 representatives of team Sky (Kennaugh, Thomas and Stannard) and Simon Richrdson of Sigma Sport.
By the time the TV broadcast of the race went live at 3.50pm that group had already built an impressive lead over the main bunch. They were pursued by a chasing group that included David Millar and looked at one point to be making progress across the gap. However, with a handful of laps remaining that group exploded and Millar climbed off, leaving his erstwhile companions to a lonely battle with the heat and the hills in search of a minor placing.
At the front it was Kennaugh who was first to light the blue touch paper, dispatching Richardson and Hunt and then Stannard, but Stannard managed to rejoin his team mates several miles later. From that point it was clear that the winner of the race would come from team Sky, but who would it be?
As expected Stannard was once again dispatched quickly when the road began to rise leaving Thomas and Kennaugh to fight out a two man sprint to the line that Thomas took by half a wheel. His first professional victory ensured that the red, white and blue champions jersey is seen in the Tour de France for the first time in a number of years.
Along with the majority of the domestic peloton, the Rapha Condor Sharp riders struggled to make a dent in the dominance of Team Sky and the team had just two finishers on the day as defending champion Kristian House rolled across the line in thirteenth place, followed just two places later by Ben Greenwood.
