Workshop Tips by Andy Verrall: Mudguards · 18/11/09

There is a north/south divide on the subject of mudguard usage over the winter.

Many clubs up north, correctly – in my opinion – insist on mudguards being used when on winter club runs. Down south you see far less mudguard use. For your own comfort, using mudguards is a must when out in the rain or out on dirty roads, as it helps keep you dry and therefore warm, and also helps keep your bike clean. In a group you won’t get sprayed from the front, especially when the rear guard has an added mudflap made from an old fairy liquid bottle cut into a thin strip bolted on the end.

Lots of riders not using guards argue they can’t fit them to their race frame. Most frames will allow guards to be fitted using P clips around the forks and cable ties over the brake bridge. Failing that, you can use the SKS Race Blades that clip onto the stays, or the new Mr Crud Roadracer guards. Although these do not work as well as full-length guards, they at least help keep you dry and your bike clean. So now there’s no excuse not to have guards on the club run!
