Workshop Tips by Andy Verrall: Buy your tubs now · 12/11/09

From posts on the Club forum it seems that many members are racing on tubs. I still feel you cannot beat the feel of a tub on the road but it can prove to be an expensive option.
Something that I do not hear much about these days, with fewer riders on tubs, is the need to mature the tub prior to use. This helps the rubber and makes the tub less prone to punctures and certainly grip better. When I was younger we had a stack of tubs maturing under the bed and I used to run a stock rotation system by dating them so the oldest got used first.
Another idea to make them easier to fit was to use old rims and fit the tub onto these. This way not only does the tub mature it stretches a little too. For the team I have gone about buying up old tub rims and have 25 now with tubs on them, all maturing and stretching ready for the next season.
You, of course, do not need this many! But I would suggest keeping at least four with you, with two on rims. Make a little note on them of the date purchased so you can always use the oldest first.
