Rapha Condor Summer Race Series Round 3 · 16/06/10

The third round of the series was run clockwise seeing riders descend the major climb at Hog Hill completing the full bottom circuit before ascending a climb, make a short descent and completing the climb before riding across the finish line.

The 3/4 race consisted of just over fifty riders including some junior and youth riders who mostly stayed together over the 50 mins. Young rider Dante Carpenter crossed the line in first clear of Bryan Crump and Robbie Whenman.

On the same course as the 3/4 men, the women’s race started with a three rider break containing two Rapha Condor riders and Chrissy Radon from High Wycombe. Sandra Mackay made a strong effort to bridge the gap to the leaders. The break worked together to consolidate their lead, in the final laps of the race the riders began to attack on the climb. The race eventually came down to a sprint, Claire Beaumont finding victory over Radon and Perry (2nd and 3rd respectively).

The course for the E 1/2/3 race was run in true crit style. The weather shone down on riders over the Redbridge Cycle Centre leaving the course bone dry and safe enough for organisers Rapha Condor, to shorten the circuit. The new course sent riders down the Hoggenberg where they would take a tight right and immediately ascending the longer climb, the course then dipped and riders made a high speed right turn onto the zig zap inner climb taking them up to the start/finish line. The shorten course left rider little respite and soon ripped the bunch apart. It was a fast and furious race with riders lapping the course every 1minute 40 seconds.

The shattered bunch was led by three riders, Dan Santani, Darren Barclay and Lewis Atkins. The trio working hard to fend off six riders trying to bridge the gap. Half way through the race Phil Hersey lept out of the chase group to try and join the three leaders. A strong and classy ride by Hersey saw him join the leaders for the final part of the race, but the efforts he expended bridging the gap meant he didn’t quite hang on to the three to the end after his valiant efforts.

Santani and Barclay rode clear in the final few laps, the two riders sprinting hard for the line with Santani edging ahead to the Artic rider to win the race. Rapha Condor awarded Phil Hersey a prize for the most attacking rider.
