Workshop Tips by Andy Verrall: Keep the Hubs · 04/12/09
Recently in a top tip about maturing tubs I spoke about keeping old tub rims. I was asked by a member if you should cut the spokes out of old wheels leaving just the rims, and the answer is yes. In the forum I mention how a spokeless rim provides more flex for fitting tight tubs. If you keep the hubs you can use these for two purposes:
- When transporting the bike in a bike bag fit the old hubs in the drop outs to prevent the frame from getting damaged, or if putting the frame in the car just hook the chain around the rear hub when the wheel is out to keep some tension in it.
- Also you can use the rear hub to keep tension in the chain when cleaning your bike. It makes life easier!
