Is this nirvana? Is this the highest point of happiness, the point at which one loses all thoughts of avarice, the point where ones own thoughts of suffering are embodied in grateful acknowledgement of what is in front of you? As we left the small hamlet of Hebden and started the climb towards Greenhow into a strong 19 mph headwind, a small framed National Champion and British Cycling legend told me to get on his wheel and through sheer will and determination I stuck with it, watching the feet in front of me spin a perfect tempo, and mesmerize my thoughts so that I was able to rock my organs to sleep, forget the pain and enjoy the view of the long steep ramps that lay ahead.

During what seems to have been a longer, darker, colder than usual winter a growing band of riders has regularly braved the inhospitable evenings. Gatherings in the gloom, dressed in black and armed with many lights, Thursday evenings outside the Royal College of Physicians have often evoked the early days of British road racing, time trialling and long Tour stages.
